GROUP HOARDING DISORDER SESSIONS

GROUP THERAPY WORKSHOPS FOR HOARDING DISORDER.

BASED IN THE EASTERN SUBURBS OF MELBOURNE –  Wednesday 21st of Feb 2024.

Hoarding is a complex issue and many people who have difficulty discarding items feel that people do not understand their attachment to objects.   Group therapy for hoarding can be appealing as it gives people an opportunity to meet others facing similar challenges.

Many People with hoarding disorder also have limited funds. They may be unable to pay for treatment so they could be limited to accessing bulk billing psychologists only. This means they can only receive 10 Medicare rebate available individual sessions per year.

The good news is that Medicare also offers rebates for 10 group sessions per year.

Catherine Madigan, a clinical psychologist is offering a 10-session group program for hoarding disorder.

Attendees would be required to do at least one individual session prior to joining a hoarding disorder woukshop, in order to be assessed.

This individual session would be bulk billed for low-income healthcare card holders and can be also offered via telehealth.

Group sessions are in person.

Should a participant not attend a session, Medicare could not be billed for that session and the participant would have to pay for the session they missed, $33.45

People not on a low income concession card would be charged $200 ( rebate $131.65) for the individual assessment session

$800 for the 10 group sessions ( total rebate $334.40 provided all ten sessions are attended as rebate is $33.45 per session, and you cannot get the rebate for a session if you do not attend a session)

The location is yet to be fixed, but would be in the Hawthorn / Kew / Camberwell area once a week.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders in Australia, with 1/7 people (14% of the population) reporting having had an anxiety disorder in the last 12 months. Women are more likely to have an anxiety disorder than men, 18% vs 11%. ABS National Survey of Mental Health & Wellbeing, Summary of Results 2007.

Anxiety or fear is a normal response to a present or imagined threat. Mild fear can be helpful as it enables us to respond quickly when faced with a dangerous situation and to be alert in difficult situations (e.g. exams). However, excessive fear may lead to people being paralysed e.g. soldiers under attack may be so afraid they can’t move to take cover, public speakers may find they go blank, forget their lines and are rendered speechless.

Anxiety is a normal emotion as it affects most people and is widespread. You would be abnormal if you didn’t experience fear sometimes. However, if your anxiety is out of proportion to the situation you are experiencing and/or persists in the absence of threat, e.g you worry about events months ahead or are experiencing anxiety long after the danger has passed, you may need professional help.

Some people are more prone to experiencing anxiety than others and it is not caused by just one thing but by a combination of factors including: genetics, family environment and traumatic life experiences. Sufferers may have unhelpful thinking patterns such as perfectionist standards. Nevertheless, you can learn to manage your anxiety more effectively.
